What Do I Need to Work Outdoors?

You can work out of doors at any time of the year if you go prepared.  I offer a few tips on how to be prepared.  What you will need will depend on the medium you are using, drawing outside is relatively simple equipment-wise but painting is a bit more complicated.

Drawing outside is a pleasure and gives so many advantages such as the quality of the light, seeing in context and in three-dimensions.  All you really need to draw outside is a good hard-backed sketchpad and two – three drawing pencils in different grades of B.

A more developed sketch or drawing might require sitting rather than standing and this case you might want to bring a simple folding camping stall and perhaps a lightweight drawing board.  Drawing outside in the summer will require water and suntan lotion, you may also want to wear a hat because when you are looking down the back of your neck can get burnt without realising!

Which Paint Type is Best for Beginners?

When we start painting many are confused by the paint media, there is acrylic, gouache, oil, watercolour so what are the differences?  Which one are best for the beginner?  I will explain the characteristics of each type of paint media.

Acrylics

Acrylic paint is fast-drying paint, water-soluble and becomes water-resistant when dry.  The paints are made from a by-product of the plastic industry so they are fairly new as an art medium (1960’s) and have become much more popular in the last few decades.

They are easy to use for beginners, they can be used in a diluted way in washes a bit like watercolour or thicker to achieve an opaque finish.  You can layer the paint as it layers with ease because the paint dries quickly so you can go over areas again and again.  The fast-drying qualities of the paint does make blending challenging as you will get lines where the  paint dries.
